Lilo

Common: Chicken
Native to: everywhere
Diet: scratch,cracked corn, insects
Sex: Female
Age: 2
Personality: Lilo is the sweet girl. Boy does she have protection. The two roosters will not let you anywhere near her. Once the boys are in the hutch she will let herself be picked up and loved on. She is laying eggs in hiding spot ( we found it) and we are pulling them to feed some of the other animals here at SC CARES. She does not seem to want to sit on the eggs and we are happy of that being a no breed shelter.
Background: On one of many vet visits SC CARES was asked if we could these two tiny little chicks. They had been found playing in the road in Surfside and turned into the Ark (vets office) After bringing them to the sanctuary and caring for these tiny creatures, they bloomed and grew into what is now known as the "three stooges"

Hens

Common: Chickens
Native to: everywhere
Diet: scratch,cracked corn, insects
Sex: Female
Age: 2
Background: Brewster and Stitch, our two roosters, were doing what roosters do--fighting over the solitary hen. We were advised to increase the number of females so we acquired five hens. Things were a little calmer for a while but the two boys are back to fighting again. Another coop was built to house each rooster with his choice of hens (or is it the hens that choose the rooster?). Come see the show as volunteers try to put eight chickens to bed for the night!

Stitch

Common: Plymouth Rock chicken
Native to: everywhere
Diet: scratch,cracked corn, insects
Sex: Male
Age: 2
Personality: Stitch came to us as a tiny little chick from the vets office- see Lilo story. He is a man with a mission. He is charged with watching over Lilo along with Brewster. We have been told we need 8 hens per rooster but at this time our coop is not big enoug for that many chickens. So Brewster being the dominant rooster sometimes takes over- leaving Stitch to boss around volunteers and guests. He wil chase and attempt to control your path but to date has not attacked to badly.
Comment: Stitch is beautiful. He and Brewster take turns crowing pretty much all day. They are all out during the day wondering around the sanctuary looking for bugs and teasing the wolves. They are definetly the three stooges- Brewster, Lilo and Stitch

Personality: Speckles is a bit protective.... or just angry- Ive threatened to send him to Anger Management classes but... Background: Millie came to us in May 2008 through a fellow rescuer who had to relocate. She has a severe under-bite which prevents her from cracking large nuts, we gladly crack them for her. Stormy

Common: Umbrella Cockatoo
Native to: Australia
Diet: nugget food, seed, fruits & veggies
Sex: Female
Age: 63
Personality: Stormy, the eldest bird here at SC CARES. She is a wonderful example of how long these parrots can live. Life span is 60-80 years for her breed of parrot. We certainly hope she will be with us for years to come.
Background: Stormy came to SC CARES in June of 2008. She lived with our fellow rescurer in NC. When a move forced the rescurer to place the remaining birds she had rescued Stormy began to pluck. She must have really bonded to one of her fellow roomates. Stormy had lived with Charlie years ago and now that they have been reunited they both seemed very happy. They spend their days out together preening eachother and hanging out. Stormy has already begun to let her feathers come back so we are excited about that.
Comment: Stormy is still a little nervous when strangers arrive but as long as she has Charlie to cuddle up to she seems satisfied. She and Charlie are so cute when they both climb in a box or bag to hide. We do not enourage breeding but for them to have a close relationship is a wonderful thing.

When hes not molting/pulling feathers, hes a beautiful bird- of course we love him anyway he chooses to be. He currently has a new love-Snuggles- much bigger than him, but he loves her to visit- he is so taken in by her beauty.
Background: Pete came to SC CARES from a local rescurer in Georgetown in 2006. She came upon him locked in a hot car & waited to ask the owners of the vehicle if they were trying to kill him? They did not care about him & said "if you want him- take him"

Background: Skipper was very attached to the woman he lived with. When she brought a man into their lives, Skipper became very jealous and possessive. He took every opportunity to attack her, biting her in the face several times. She opted to give up Skipper in favor of the man. Wise choice??? We would think not !!

Rocky

Common: Mealy Amazon
Native to: South America
Diet: Fruits,nuts,seeds
Sex: Male
Age: 25
Personality: Rocky is wonderful boy- he is generally quite calm. When he does talk- his voice is lots different from the other birds in the hut. He has made many friends-feathered & human. His closest neighbor, Molly, comes to visit at his house everyday. He is really a very shy bird and very easy going.. he is a sweetheart.
Background: Rocky came to us from a wonderful woman in NC who had been keeping the bird for a sick friend- for ten years. She talked with this friend on many occasions but the friend was still unable to take him back. This lady had dogs & Rocky was not fond of them so living together was difficult. The woman felt Rocky would be happier here & we sure enjoy his company.
Comment: Rocky has currently taken to two of our volunteers- he will call to them when they come to visit & fairly quick to climb on their arm for some one on one attention. What a neat guy!
Foster Parents: Monica McCrory

Greenie

Common: White-fronted Amazon
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables

Molly

She has been know to fly off her house, jump on the head of a volunteer in an attack mode. Molly will visit with Rocky, her neighbor, everyday- she hangs out at his house more than at her own.
Background: Molly has lived beyond two humans. Her age is completely unknown. The gentleman who brought her to SC CARES had just lost his father, who was the last caretaker of the bird & the father had taken the bird from a woman who passed away.

Handsome

Common: African Grey
Native to: Africa
Diet: nugget food, seed, fruits & veggies
Sex: Male
Age: 5
Personality: Handsome is a georgous boy. He has gotten even more personality since coming to SC CARES in March 2007. He is very skeptical about stepping up on the hand but will step up on a stick readily. Handsome usually gets down from his house and visits other places in the hut everyday.
Background: Handsome was one of the birds we took in from breeders who retired. He had been DNA tested so we do know for sure he is a he. His breeding mate died before the breeders closed down but he has made pretty good friends with Kinshasa, the other African Grey. Handsome seems happy so we are glad for that.

Kinshasa

Common: African Grey
Native to: Africa
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 8
Personality: She has become attached to Skip and tracks him down anytime he is in the hut.
Background: Our very first baby purchase, just before we became aware of the plight of companion birds and exotic animals in general.
Comment: An unfortunate tragedy occurred last Nov.(2009)- Kinshasa was taken outside & we didnt realize her flight feathers had grown in- she became startled & flew to the trees- after searching for weeks- we were not successful in finding her... we miss her terribly & wish things had been different....our hearts ache & we will always love her!! Were sorry we let you down.....

Alex

Common: Blue and gold macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 12
Personality: Alex will raise her right wing when you say Hi. She usually says Bye when you exit the hut. She is a little difficult to read, one minute she will hold still to have her head scratched and the next minute she will whip around and bite you. She knows only one bite mode and that is full strength. Most volunteers are intimidated by her and rightly so.
Background: Alex came to us through a veterinarian that had her (she has been DNA tested) in his office for years. A young college grad tried to keep her but he was intimidated and soon called us.

Celeste

Common: Blue and gold macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 8
Personality: Celeste is a terrific ambassador and represents SC-CARES at many functions. She can often be seen at our educational programs and fund raisers.
Background: Celeste is one of the original parrots we took in.

Elvis

Common: Blue and gold macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Fruits,nuts,seeds
Sex: Female
Age: 19
Personality: Elvis is a leader in our macaw family. She is not too aggressive but will not stand being pushed around. Elvis will allow some of us to "taxi" her to her house for feeding time & bedtime- just so that she can get there quicker. She does like to talk & interact with people- but is satisfied doing her thing- climbing on the limbs & hanging out with Savannah & Alex.
Background: Elvis belonged to a family & bonded exclusively to the man. Unfortunately her partner passed away. The wife knew how much her husband & Elvis loved each other & tried for 4 years to gain trust & form a bond with this bird, the womans son(being male) tried as well but was not successful. It may have been that the familiar circumstances kept Elvis longing for her person, and the stress of missing him caused her to start plucking. The family, although heartbroken brought Elvis to us hoping that she might be happier with other macaws. So far things are going well- she has in fact made friends & we are happy that she will at least come to some of us for her taxi ride.

Poseidon

Common: Blue and gold macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 11
Personality: “Sy” rings her bell to get attention and blows kisses. She plays fetch: you hand her something, she takes it in her beak, drops it and you fetch.
Background: Hand raised from infancy, very strong bonds were formed. Parting was tough for her human companion. When her companion became involved in a human relationship jealousy resulted. Sy became aggressive with both the boyfriend and the young woman who raised her. She came to SC-CARES April 14,2009.
Comment: Because Sy has been DNA tested, we are certain of her gender.
Foster Parents: Alicia Stroman

Savannah

Common: Blue and gold macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 52
Personality: She has developed a severe plucking habit that we cannot seem to break. At first she was afraid of any male with a ball cap, now she has calmed down around ball caps but she responded similarly to a tour that came through with a man that was heavy set and had a mustache. We may never know, we are thankful she does not mutilate her flesh like some do.
Background: Savannah came to us from the wildlife rehab group in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where Cindy and Skip did wildlife rescue. She came from a broken home where she was neglected and abused by, we think, the male in the family.

Buzz

Common: Catalina Macaw
Native to: Not found in the wild-hybrid
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 12
Personality: Buzz is a beautiful macaw. He is a little shy and although he is twice the size of the other macaws, he seems to be pretty passive.
Background: Buzz came to us in February 2008 from a couple here in the area who had him since he was very young. Because he was becoming a little aggressive, the couple thought he would be happier here at SC CARES with other macaws. So far all is going well.
Comment: He is still getting settled in here at SC CARES. It sometimes takes parrots a while to adjust to new surroundings, but we are very pleased with how well the other macaws and Buzz have interacted.

Geronimo

Common: Catalina Macaw
Native to: Not found in the wild-hybrid
Diet: nugget food, seed, fruits & veggies
Sex: Male
Age: 6
Personality: All I can say is WOW. Geronimo is one to watch closely. That beak is so powerful and at times he can be a bit scary. He is fitting in faily well with the other macaws and based on his history he has already improved. We are not giving up on him and in time I think he will be more settled and happy.
Background: In the life of a parrot, Geronimo is probably our best example of abuse and neglect. He is 5 years old and SC CARES is his 5th home. Aside from being bitey and very intimidating he picked up some pretty foul language from humans he was exposed to. You can tell a lot of the angry words were said to him which is a constant reminder of why parrots should be in the wild and not in the home, especially with people who are not prepared to deal with life and a parrot. It is really sad to hear him cuss and yell knowing this has happened to him. After 3 other homes he landed with a young couple from a local pet store. They were able to do more with and for him than any so far. Having to relocate they brought Geronimo here.
Comment: Geronimo has fallen in love with Buzz- the only other macaw of his kind. Not knowing who might be male or female- the two seem to have a bond. Geronimo is very protective over Buzz but we have a system so that Geronimo can come out and play everyday and knows when the keyword "nite nite" is said it is time to go back into his house for the night.

Herbie

Common: Golden-collared Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, Nuts, Fruit & Veggies
Sex: Male
Age: 5
Personality: Herbie is a sweet bird, although not fond of being handled unless HE chooses you. He will call "here kitty, kitty" in a voice that sounds very mischeivious. Some of the volunteers will finish this phrase for him & say "so I can bite you" He does sound like he is setting a trap but has never really bothered Garfield (the hut kitty) at all.
Background: Herbie lived with Greenie in a home in NC. They came to SC CARES in 2007 after being found by authorities when the human they lived with had died and been dead for 3 weeks. Animal control took them in and nursed them back to health.

Murray

Common: Golden-collared Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 3
Personality: He will ask you if "you want a peanut?" He is just too cute.
Background: Murray came to us through another rehabber that thought he might be happier with the other bird companions.

Jade

Common: Military Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 9
Personality: She is becoming more social and has developed a special bond with Celeste, we may have to reclassify one of the two a “he”.
Background: We call Jade a rescue but we actually paid for with her cage when she was being sold. This family never socialized with Jade & their fear made her fearful of people handling her. These animals pick up on human feelings & it does have an effect on them

Morgan

Common: Scarlett (Ruby) Macaw-hybrid
Native to: not found in the wild
Diet: Fruits,nuts,seeds
Sex: Female
Age: 7
Personality: Morgan seems to be a sweet girl- she is quick to say "hello" to you as you walk by. She has some issues with plucking & we hope in the future she will lighten up on that & let some of the beautiful feathers come in. Morgan & Stacy are new arrivals here- so they are still in the adjustment time. We hope as they become comfortable here life will be good. We are now in the transition of opening their doors & allowing them physical introduction to our macaw family- our hope is that they all get along & they are able to live in our "flock" situation happily.
Background: Morgan & Stacy came to us from a family that had taken them in from a friend who was suffering major health issues. They kept the birds for over a year but were not able to adjust to life with macaws so they felt they would better off here.

Stacy

Common: Scarlett (Ruby) Macaw-hybrid
Native to: not found in the wild
Diet: Fruits,nuts,seeds
Sex: Female
Age: 5
Personality: Stacy is for sure the more outgoing of this pair. She is a pretty bird & will tell you this herself, over & over. She has already been pretty friendly with some of our volunteers- allowing us to give her a head rub. At the opening door transition, it took her only a few minutes to come out- we hope both birds continue to adjust & hopefully be very happy.
Background: Morgan & Stacy came to us from a family that had taken them in from a friend who was suffering major health issues. They kept the birds for over a year but were not able to adjust to life with macaws so they felt they would better off here.

Albert

Common: Quacker Parrot
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, Nuts
Sex: Male
Age: 13
Personality: Albert has a wonderful personality.. he loves to talk saying things like.."Hey Albert, Albert good boy & give me a kiss..." His cheerful disposition is a joy.
Background: Albert came from a loving home. It was discovered that Alberts sounds were causing seizures for an autistic child in the home, so to help her child, the mother gave up her loving relationship with Albert & brought him to live with us in July of 2009. Albert is happy & well adjusted & we love him.

Background: Mango came to us in September 2007 from a family that was relocating and could not keep her.

Diet: Seeds, Nuts
Sex: Female
Age: 3
Personality: Mika has become a popular girl here at SC CARES- shes not only very colorful in plumage but also in personality!! She will come out of her cage & wait to loved on. She doesnt seem to be bothered at all with her missing foot- she is such a happy & sweet girl- loves kisses!!
Background: Mika came to us from a fellow rescuer in Richmond,Va.

Mugsie

Common: Pigeon
Native to: everywhere
Diet: seeds
Sex: Male
Age: 2
Personality: The age of Mugsie is purely a guess.. Mugsie is still adjusting to life in captivity. He is shy of humans but once being held seems to enjoy the attention. Just recently we started letting him out of his house to walk around in a secure area. He really acted as though he enjoyed that.
Background: Mugsie was found on the side of the road by a couple of our volunteers coming from Columbia. After a visit to the vet x-rays determined his wing was broken in a couple of places. He was in a wing bandage for 8 weeks & once the bandages were removed, with the breaks he had, his wing still droops. He can not fly, so therefore can not be released back to the wild. We will do ALL that we can to make sure he has a wonderful life here.

Ringo

Common: Ring-neck dove
Native to: almost anywhere
Diet: seeds
Sex: Male
Age: 6
Personality: Ringo is a very sweet bird- he loves to coo his song to most anyone that will listen. His sweet voice is relaxing to hear.
Background: Ringo was a hatchling project for a classroom and at the end of the school year- luckily one of the students parents agreed to take him home with her. This family had cat members as well. The dove and cats did pretty good for several years but the cats curiosity in wanting to play with Ringo was beginning to be a concern. This family contacted us about taking Ringo so that he wouldnt be stressed by the cats.
Comment: Although Garfield (cat) lives in the hut with the other animals- as has been in the past- he pays no attention to Ringo as well as the other residents here. We are so lucky.

Chester

Common: Great Horned Owl
Native to: North America
Diet: Small mammals
