Simon

Common: Rooster
Native to: Everywhere
Diet: our special chicken mix & bugs
Sex: Male
Age: 5
Personality: Simon is our friendliest rooster!! He allows me to pick him up on tours so that people visiting can actually touch him...he is so soft and his colors are beautiful!!! Simon hangs out behind the hut with our elder chickens-Sprout, Mary & Mable...he loves his girls!!
Background: Simon came in as a tiny chick-we actually hoped he would be a she!! So far so good- he has not chased people and will let us pet him to give him love!!! Simon came to us from some sweet ladies that were able to catch him after their neighbors moved out & left lots of hens & roosters there with no one to take care of them....
Comment: We named Simon after the late "Sam Simon" Co-director of the Simpsons...he passed away in March-2015 & before his passing set up funds to help animals all over the globe....the animals are so very grateful Sam....thank you for caring about them!!!!

Norman

Common: Goffin Cockatoo aka Tanimbar Corella
Native to: Indonesia
Diet: nuggets & seed mix
Sex: Male
Age: 25
Personality: Norman is a character- mostly quiet but when he does get excited his voice is very loud. Hes a very sweet boy though and has adjusted pretty well with life here at SC CARES.
Background: Normans previous caretaker was one of our supporters and in her declining health Norman & his friends were brought to us. Barbara Bush loved her animals and since her passing-weve missed her & Im sure the birds do too! She called him "Stormin Norman"

Polly

Common: Blue-crowned Conure
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 12
Personality: Update 12/2014- Polly is such a patient bird- she allows so many other parrots visit her house during the day while they are out- Pollys house is in the kitchen so of course lots of the birds like hanging out there! Polly is not fond of being held but over the years we have been able to touch her at times and on sparse occasions she will climb on a shoulder...we will take whatever these birds are comfortable giving in way of affection!
Background: Breeder rescue.

Harry

Common: Blue-fronted Amazon
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 20
Personality: Harry just arrived at SC CARES this week. He is in his acclimation period- so far though he is singing & calling out "hello" so although it has only been a few days he is comfortable enough to talk to us...we will update his page as he progresses.
Background: Harry & Pickles came to us in Jan.2011 after the death of their human companion-Virginia "Jenny" Mengulerti. Jenny loved these two birds & pampered them lots. Thankfully we had just enough room for both of them to stay together..people mourn & so do animals. I know they are wondering where their Jenny is & I wish I could speak their language to tell them...all we can do is give them love and attention. Hopefully they will make friends with some of our other parrot residents & their life will be good...
Foster Parents: Betty & Mark Erwin (2016)

Skipper

Common: Blue-fronted Amazon
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 23
Personality: Skipper can be aggressive but with time, attention and work will hopefully calm. He came to us in May 2008. He meows like a cat and loves to sing his version of opera.
Background: Skipper was very attached to the woman he lived with. When she brought a man into their lives, Skipper became very jealous and possessive. He took every opportunity to attack her, biting her in the face several times. She opted to give up Skipper in favor of the man. Wise choice??? We would think not !!

Greenie

Common: White-fronted Amazon
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 19
Personality: Greenie is very attached to Cindy and likes to ride around on her head like a huge barrette.
Background: Greenie and Herbie came to us from in 2007 the vet in Clemmons, North Carolina. They were both found when authorities entered the home of a man that had been dead for 3 weeks. Animal control rehabbed them and contacted us to give them a final home.

Molly

Common: Yellow-headed Amazon
Native to: Central America & Mexico
Diet: Fruits,nuts,seeds
Sex: Female
Age: 29
Personality: Molly is a bit moody.. some days she is fine with volunteers passing by & other days not so happy about it. She has been know to fly off her house, jump on the head of a volunteer in an attack mode. Molly will visit with Rocky, her neighbor, everyday- she hangs out at his house more than at her own.
Background: Molly has lived beyond two humans. Her age is completely unknown. The gentleman who brought her to SC CARES had just lost his father, who was the last caretaker of the bird & the father had taken the bird from a woman who passed away.

Sweetheart

Common: Conure
Native to: hybrid not found in the wild
Diet: seeds,nuts,fruits & veggies
Sex: Female
Age: 10
Personality: Sweetheart is a high energy bird...for whatever reason-she does not like women with blonde hair...she has been in at least 2 other homes before coming to SC CARES- who knows what happened...
Background: Sweetheart is one of the 3 foster birds that we were holding & have turned out to be permanent residents here- Sweetheart was listed as a Nansun Conure- which I believe is probably a cross breed of the Nanday & Sun Conure...

Handsome

Common: African Grey
Native to: Africa
Diet: nugget food, seed, fruits & veggies
Sex: Male
Age: 14
Personality: Handsome is a georgous boy. He has gotten even more personality since coming to SC CARES in March 2007. He is very skeptical about stepping up on the hand but will step up on a stick readily. Handsome usually gets down from his house and visits other places in the hut everyday.
Background: Handsome was one of the birds we took in from breeders who retired. He had been DNA tested so we do know for sure he is a he. His breeding mate died before the breeders closed down but he has made pretty good friends with Kinshasa, the other African Grey. Handsome seems happy so we are glad for that.
Comment: Update 12/2014 Handsome & Pickles have formed a close bond- they hang out together everyday & love it!!! Were so happy they have each other !!

Pickles

Common: African Grey
Native to: Africa
Diet: nugget food, seed, fruits & veggies
Sex: Female
Age: 18
Personality: Pickles is acclimating as well as Harry...Pickles has been talking to us since he arrived, which is great since lots of their life has changed in the past month...he is a very good talker, calling out "pretty bird" & we respond with "Yes you are!" Hopefully he & Harry will adjust & be happy- currently their houses are side by side- giving them some familiarity while this transition takes place...we will update his personality as we figure this out together...
Background: Pickles & Harry came to us in Jan.2011 after the death of their human companion-Virginia "Jenny" Mengulerti.
Comment: Update 12/2014 Pickles & Handsome have a wonderful bond- they hang out together everyday & really seem to be happy with each other!!!
Foster Parents: Sue Davis, Betty & Mark Erwin (2016)

Doc Holiday

Common: Blue & Gold Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: seeds,nuts,fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 20
Personality: Doc is very shy and sweet. A calm macaw who enjoys hanging out and watching the other birds act crazy!
Background: Doc spent his entire previous life with the same family-17 years-but his caretakers have gotten older and were no longer in the physical shape needed to care for him. Doc has a caring family who still checks on him- he is one of the luckier ones!

Houdini

Common: Blue & Gold Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 26
Personality: Houdini is in an adjustment period, so far he seems relatively calm. We will update you as he acclimates...
Background: Houdini came to us from a woman who loves him dearly. She has had him for 18 years. His plumage is just not what it should be and she has tried in many ways to help him but without success. We are going to slowly change his diet & hope that his condition improves. We will keep you posted...
Comment: Update 12/2014 well, sadly Houdini has not had new feather growth- it does let most of his down feathers come in but for whatever the reason his outer feathers either will not come in. He seems happy & is a great eater...

Celeste

Common: Blue and gold macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 17
Personality: Celeste is a terrific ambassador and represents SC-CARES at many functions. She can often be seen at our educational programs and fund raisers.
Background: Celeste is one of the original parrots we took in.
Comment: Update 12/2014 Celeste has bonded with Jade & last time we got a carrier out to take her out for a program she climbed all the way to the top of their enclosure & would not come down...we tried a second time later & the same thing happened so I think the message was pretty clear that she did not want to go...they are so smart!! So in order to see Celeste you would have to come out for a tour- she said she liked it better at home!

Elvis

Common: Blue and gold macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Fruits,nuts,seeds
Sex: Female
Age: 28
Personality: Elvis is a leader in our macaw family. She is not too aggressive but will not stand being pushed around. Elvis will allow some of us to "taxi" her to her house for feeding time & bedtime- just so that she can get there quicker. She does like to talk & interact with people- but is satisfied doing her thing- climbing on the limbs & hanging out with Savannah & Alex.
Background: Elvis belonged to a family & bonded exclusively to the man. Unfortunately her partner passed away. The wife knew how much her husband & Elvis loved each other & tried for 4 years to gain trust & form a bond with this bird, the womans son(being male) tried as well but was not successful. It may have been that the familiar circumstances kept Elvis longing for her person, and the stress of missing him caused her to start plucking. The family, although heartbroken brought Elvis to us hoping that she might be happier with other macaws. So far things are going well- she has in fact made friends & we are happy that she will at least come to some of us for her taxi ride.

Poseidon

Common: Blue and gold macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 20
Personality: “Sy” rings her bell to get attention and blows kisses. She plays fetch: you hand her something, she takes it in her beak, drops it and you fetch.
Background: Hand raised from infancy, very strong bonds were formed. Parting was tough for her human companion. When her companion became involved in a human relationship jealousy resulted. Sy became aggressive with both the boyfriend and the young woman who raised her. She came to SC-CARES April 14,2009.
Comment: Because Sy has been DNA tested, we are certain of her gender.

Savannah

Common: Blue and gold macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 61
Personality: She has developed a severe plucking habit that we cannot seem to break. At first she was afraid of any male with a ball cap, now she has calmed down around ball caps but she responded similarly to a tour that came through with a man that was heavy set and had a mustache. We may never know, we are thankful she does not mutilate her flesh like some do.
Background: Savannah came to us from the wildlife rehab group in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where Cindy and Skip did wildlife rescue. She came from a broken home where she was neglected and abused by, we think, the male in the family.

Scratch

Common: Blue and Gold Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: seeds,nuts,fruits & veggies
Sex: Male
Age: 21
Personality: Scratch is a character! He will say "HELLO" hundreds of times a day- also says-"Polly want a cracker?" He has some issues with some females- as bad as wanting to actively attack them...Scratch has had a very rocky beginning- at the age of 15- we are his 5th home...someone mutilated his wings- I do not know if they were partially amputated or what but his has no flight feathers at all...may explain the disliking women??? He is full of personality & we hope that he will continue to grow to like some of us humans..time will tell
Background: Scratch is one of the 3 foster birds that are now permanent residents of SC CARES- hopefully he will continue to adjust here & realize he CAN be happy!-He is not going to another home...

Buzz

Common: Catalina Macaw
Native to: Not found in the wild-hybrid
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 21
Personality: Buzz is a beautiful macaw. He is a little shy and although he is twice the size of the other macaws, he seems to be pretty passive.
Background: Buzz came to us in February 2008 from a couple here in the area who had him since he was very young. Because he was becoming a little aggressive, the couple thought he would be happier here at SC CARES with other macaws. So far all is going well.
Comment: He is still getting settled in here at SC CARES. It sometimes takes parrots a while to adjust to new surroundings, but we are very pleased with how well the other macaws and Buzz have interacted.

Geronimo

Common: Catalina Macaw
Native to: Not found in the wild-hybrid
Diet: nugget food, seed, fruits & veggies
Sex: Male
Age: 15
Personality: All I can say is WOW. Geronimo is one to watch closely. That beak is so powerful and at times he can be a bit scary. He is fitting in faily well with the other macaws and based on his history he has already improved. We are not giving up on him and in time I think he will be more settled and happy.
Background: In the life of a parrot, Geronimo is probably our best example of abuse and neglect. He is 5 years old and SC CARES is his 5th home. Aside from being bitey and very intimidating he picked up some pretty foul language from humans he was exposed to. You can tell a lot of the angry words were said to him which is a constant reminder of why parrots should be in the wild and not in the home, especially with people who are not prepared to deal with life and a parrot. It is really sad to hear him cuss and yell knowing this has happened to him. After 3 other homes he landed with a young couple from a local pet store. They were able to do more with and for him than any so far. Having to relocate they brought Geronimo here.
Comment: Geronimo has fallen in love with Buzz- the only other macaw of his kind. Not knowing who might be male or female- the two seem to have a bond. Geronimo is very protective over Buzz but we have a system so that Geronimo can come out and play everyday and knows when the keyword "nite nite" is said it is time to go back into his house for the night.

Herbie

Common: Golden-collared Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, Nuts, Fruit & Veggies
Sex: Male
Age: 19
Personality: Herbie is a sweet bird, although not fond of being handled unless HE chooses you. He will call "here kitty, kitty" in a voice that sounds very mischeivious. Some of the volunteers will finish this phrase for him & say "so I can bite you" He does sound like he is setting a trap but has never really bothered Garfield (the hut kitty) at all.
Background: Herbie lived with Greenie in a home in NC. They came to SC CARES in 2007 after being found by authorities when the human they lived with had died and been dead for 3 weeks. Animal control took them in and nursed them back to health.

Murray

Common: Golden-collared Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 12
Personality: He will ask you if "you want a peanut?" He is just too cute.
Background: Murray came to us through another rehabber that thought he might be happier with the other bird companions.

Morgan

Common: Scarlet (Ruby) Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Fruits,nuts,seeds
Sex: Female
Age: 16
Personality: Morgan seems to be a sweet girl- she is quick to say "hello" to you as you walk by. She has some issues with plucking & we hope in the future she will lighten up on that & let some of the beautiful feathers come in. Morgan & Stacy are new arrivals here- so they are still in the adjustment time. We hope as they become comfortable here life will be good. We are now in the transition of opening their doors & allowing them physical introduction to our macaw family- our hope is that they all get along & they are able to live in our "flock" situation happily.
Background: Morgan & Stacy came to us from a family that had taken them in from a friend who was suffering major health issues. They kept the birds for over a year but were not able to adjust to life with macaws so they felt they would better off here.

Stacy

Common: Scarlet (Ruby) Macaw
Native to: South America
Diet: Fruits,nuts,seeds
Sex: Female
Age: 14
Personality: Stacy is for sure the more outgoing of this pair. She is a pretty bird & will tell you this herself, over & over. She has already been pretty friendly with some of our volunteers- allowing us to give her a head rub. At the opening door transition, it took her only a few minutes to come out- we hope both birds continue to adjust & hopefully be very happy.
Background: Morgan & Stacy came to us from a family that had taken them in from a friend who was suffering major health issues. They kept the birds for over a year but were not able to adjust to life with macaws so they felt they would better off here.

George

Common: Quaker Parrot
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 12
Personality: Update- 12/2014 George & Weezie seem very happy together but will not tolerate being touched & do not get along too well with the other birds...I am glad they have each other though! This comes from being used in the breeding industry- not being socialized with humans is one part of getting them to breed & lay eggs for selling....it has not been a problem yet but their little toes are crippled from not even having perches in their cages when they were with the breeder- all they could do was cling to side of the cage causing this deformity- Breeders need to shut down!
Background: Breeder rescue.

Weezie

Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 12
