Gone But Not Forgotten

One of the hardest parts of caring for so many animals is dealing with loss. It never gets any easier to say goodbye. But thanks to the many generous people that help support this sanctuary, we always know that we have provided the best life possible for each animal, whether for many years or just a short period of time. Still, we miss our friends when they are gone. These are the special animals that we remember every day. They have enriched our lives in a meaningful and everlasting way.

Allie

Common: Budgerigar Parakeet
Native to: Australia
Diet: seeds,nuts,fruits & vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 4
Died: January 1, 2015
Personality: Allie seems to be a follower- Blue is definitely the leader of the two. As we get ready to have them all out together- we will cross our fingers that the 4 parakeets will all get along. Three of them are males so there is no guarantee..
Background: Allie & Blue came to us from a family that realized they required more time than they thought- they felt these two would be happier here.
Comment: Just as we had hoped all of the parakeets are living together...they made the decision themselves...on one of their days out as we were putting everyone to bed we saw that all four of the parakeets had gone to bed in the same house...there apparently was a little toe biting but currently they are all getting along...

Blue

Common: Budgerigar Parakeet

Background: Blue & Allie came to us from a family who had not had them long, but soon realized they required more time than they originally thought. They felt they would be happier here where they could come out of the cage & play more.
Comment: Just as we had hoped all of the parakeets are living together...they made the decision themselves...on one of their days out as we were putting everyone to bed we saw that all four of the parakeets had gone to bed in the same house...there apparently was a little toe biting but currently they are all getting along...Blue had some respiratory issues & was on meds- had an appt. at the vet upcoming but sadly didnt make it...

Background: OK- this is a good one...Pete,a volunteer who works at Walmart received a call in the middle of the night that a chicken had walked through the front doors of Walmart...Pete & Stephanie(another volunteer) sped to the rescue- the other employees had gotten her into a cardboard box- our volunteers placed her in a cat kennel & brought her out to the sanctuary the following day....

Personality: Rhonda is a very active girl! She and her friends, Marvella & Wilma are always at the back of the hut asking for treats!! If you do not give them a treat and there is food out- they will help themselves!! They are absolutely full of personality!!
Background: A local woman that has chickens for egg laying was downsizing and since she felt these three girls were not laying like younger hens, she was leery to give them to anyone else for that purpose- thankfully she called us and we were able to help! Sprout

Common: Chickens
Native to: everywhere
Diet: scratch,cracked corn, insects
Sex: Female
Age: 9
Died: April 30, 2018
Background: Brewster and Stitch, our two roosters, were doing what roosters do--fighting over the solitary hen. We were advised to increase the number of females so we acquired five hens. Things were a little calmer for a while but the two boys are back to fighting again. Another coop was built to house each rooster with his choice of hens (or is it the hens that choose the rooster?). Come see the show as volunteers try to put eight chickens to bed for the night!
Comment: Sprout is the Dominique chicken on the right.

Loretta

Common: Hen
Native to: everywhere
Diet: poultry mix
Sex: Female
Age: 5
Died: October 29, 2018

Background: Conway & Loretta came to us from a lady who wanted to raise chickens- her neighbors were not impressed when Conway learned how to sing "good morning"

Stitch

Common: Plymouth Rock chicken
Native to: everywhere
Diet: scratch,cracked corn, insects
Sex: Male
Age: 3
Died: March 8, 2011
Personality: Stitch came to us as a tiny little chick from the vets office- see Lilo story. He is a man with a mission. He is charged with watching over Lilo along with Brewster. We have been told we need 8 hens per rooster but at this time our coop is not big enough for that many chickens. So Brewster being the dominant rooster sometimes takes over- leaving Stitch to boss around volunteers and guests. He wil chase and attempt to control your path but to date has not attacked to badly.
Comment: Stitch is beautiful. He and Brewster take turns crowing pretty much all day. They are all out during the day wondering around the sanctuary looking for bugs and teasing the wolves. They are definetly the three stooges- Brewster, Lilo and Stitch

Brewster

Common: Rooster
Native to: Everywhere
Diet: scratch,cracked corn, insects
Sex: Male
Age: 5
Died: February 18, 2012

Background: We actually do not know how old Brewster is. He was found playing in traffic on a busy highway, luckily in front of a caring persons home. She picked him up & brought him to us.
Comment: Brewsters comb looked pale about a week ago & upon closer inspection- he had lost weight & was pretty lethargic...he had been in the hut with us for observation & to make sure he got a chance to eat- we tried to clean out his crop in case he was impacted but the stress of the procedure was too much for him..I wish we knew more, could do more...Brewster had been a close friend & my worst enemy- in other words- he was everything to me! I miss him terribly....

Red

Common: Rooster
Native to: everywhere
Diet: scratch & bugs
Sex: Male
Age: 4

Reggie

Common: Rooster
Native to: Everywhere
Diet: scratch,cracked corn, insects

Age: 2
Died: December 21, 2010
Personality: Reggie was the sweetest rooster I have ever met...not only was he beautiful on the outside but just as beautiful on the inside... we miss him terribly!!
Background: Reggie was rescued by a neighbor in Charleston, South Carolina who found him outside, without shelter, his feet tied together and tethered to the ground after her neighbors moved away and left him. She gave him shelter, food and water before calling us.

He, Tamarin & Red live together beside of Daisy & Jimmy- we tried to leave them in with the pigs but Speckles kept attacking the volunteers.. they seem to be happy together & all three crow every morning!!
Background: Speckles, Tamarin & Red came to SC CARES from Carolina Waterfowl in NC. Theyre not waterfowl but this wonderful group tries to help all of the creatures they can & these roosters were taken in along with a lot of others & needed a permanent home.

Tamarin

Common: Rooster
Native to: everywhere
Diet: scratch & bugs
Sex: Male
Age: 1
Died: July 4, 2010
Personality: Tamarin is a beautiful boy- named by one of our volunteers because his coloring is just like the Golden Tamarin primates. Hes much more laid back than Speckles- these boys are the three musketeers.
Background: Speckles, Tamarin & Red came to SC CARES from Carolina Waterfowl in NC. Theyre not waterfowl but this wonderful group tries to help all of the creatures they can & these roosters were taken in along with a lot of others & needed a permanent home.

Age: 7
Died: May 26, 2014

Background: Dannys human companion, due to health reasons, felt he would be better off here at SC CARES. I am sure Danny misses her companionship but seems to be adjusting. We wish Dannys mom the very best & hope that everything works out for her.
Comment: It really disturbs me when this happens...Danny seemed fine- then Thurs-morning he was gone....
Foster Parents: Barbie Culbertson

Sex: Female
Age: 11
Died: August 3, 2014
Personality: Nala & Stitch seem very shy..although it might be a little intimidating in the small bird room with all of their new friends... we have opened their door but they have not ventured out yet...can not wait for them to have the opportunity to fly around the room... it is great to watch these birds take flight and at least spread their wings...
Background: Nala & Stitch came to us from a family who could no longer care for them...
Comment: Nala is on the right.Sadly we lost Nala last night- at 11 years old- this just doesnt seem right- she started having seizures yesterday- I held her hoping that I could at least be with her when she passed but she left us last night- I have no idea what caused the seizures she had been fine just the day before- these birds give you no warning anything is wrong with them- I wish they could talk to me....sweet angel- always let me give her kisses- is flying free (Nala is the sweet girl on the right in this picture)

Reebok

Common: Cockatiel
Native to: Australia
Diet: seeds,nut,fruits,veggies
Sex: Male
Age: 13
Died: May 30, 2015
Personality: Reebok is a sweet boy...once adjusting to all of his new friends..human & bird..he seems to be happy. He has recently stepped up & hung out with me in the small bird room- although his neighbor -Mika- seems to get a bit jealous..he is making new friends and hopefully will be happy here...Reebok is an excellent whistler!
Background: Reebok came to us from a young woman in Charlotte who had been his companion since grade school...after graduation from college & having to move away from him- she felt he was not getting the attention he craved..he came from a loving environment and hopefully feels that he is loved here..
Comment: Its with much sadness that I have to tell you Reebok(cockatiel) had to be put down yesterday...several weeks ago he wasnt acting right & thankfully-Emily was willing to take him to the vet & home with her to give him the special attention (hand feeding, meds, oxygen). Apparently he had liver disease & Emily went above & beyond doing everything possible to help him- he wasnt able to turn the corner- hes waiting for us at the bridge whistling his tune.

Millie

Common: Moluccan Cockatoo
Native to: Eastern Indonesia
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Female
Age: 19
Died: May 13, 2019
Personality: Millie is full of personality. She has beautiful salmon-pink feathers with large dark eyes that seem to study you. This species of cockatoo has one of the louder calls in the parrot world and Millie demonstrates this often. She also whispers in the sweetest way. The moluccan scream has been measured at 135 decibels, a 747 jet clocks in at 140 db, 105 db is considered damaging to ear.
Background: Millie came to us in May 2008 through a fellow rescuer who had to relocate. She has a severe under-bite which prevents her from cracking large nuts, we gladly crack them for her. Because of this condition, her beak requires regular trimming. The Moluccan Cockatoo is the largest of the white cockatoos.

Stormy

Common: Umbrella Cockatoo
Native to: Australia
Diet: nugget food, seed, fruits & veggies
Sex: Female
Age: 70
Died: January 10, 2017
Personality: Stormy, the eldest bird here at SC CARES. She is a wonderful example of how long these parrots can live. Life span is 60-80 years for her breed of parrot. We certainly hope she will be with us for years to come.
Background: Stormy came to SC CARES in June of 2008. She lived with our fellow rescurer in NC. When a move forced the rescurer to place the remaining birds she had rescued Stormy began to pluck. She must have really bonded to one of her fellow roomates. Stormy had lived with Charlie years ago and now that they have been reunited they both seemed very happy. They spend their days out together preening eachother and hanging out. Stormy has already begun to let her feathers come back so we are excited about that.
Comment: Stormy is still a little nervous when strangers arrive but as long as she has Charlie to cuddle up to she seems satisfied. She and Charlie are so cute when they both climb in a box or bag to hide. We do not enourage breeding but for them to have a close relationship is a wonderful thing.

Buddy

Common: Green-cheeked Conure
Native to: South America
Diet: Seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables
Sex: Male
Age: 8
Died: December 21, 2015
Personality: Update-12/2014 I do not wish to talk badly about any of our creatures here but Buddy has the nickname of Buddy the Bully...he is responsible for several toe bites in the small bird room...Buddy has his own private days out of his house just to limit any fighting...He is a little bird with a BIG attitude!! We still love him though!
Background: Breeder rescue.

Norman

Common: Angus Steer
Native to: everywhere
Diet: grains & hay
Sex: Male
Age: 8
Died: June 10, 2017
Personality: Norman is still shy but has adjusted well here. He bellows out when it is time for feeding...you can hear him mooing all around. He has allowed a few of us to pet and kiss him- as long as you feed him..so while he is eating is the best time to steal a kiss...what a playful boy he is- he will try to sneak up behind you & then turn to run so you can chase him...we do this back and forth gotcha game for a while- he really seems to enjoy the attention!!
Background: Norman has had a very rocky beginning- being born on a local farm- Norman, as an infant, was dragged across the field by a donkey. The donkey broke Normans leg at the femur. The leg was not set properly & too much time had passed by the time we got the call to take him in. After a visit to the vet & x-rays- it was determined that the break had calcified & all we could do is hope that he would use the leg for balance. So far so good- he will use it when he runs & to balance himself- keep good thoughts for him, we really need him to use that leg.

Izzie

Common: Dog
Native to: Worldwide
Diet: Dog Chow
Sex: Female
Age: 13
Died: May 1, 2008
Personality: Izzie short for Isabella is deaf, some brain damage & spinal damage but loves walkabouts & pettings. Shes a sweet ole girl & as long as she stays happy & doesnt appear to be in pain, well keep loving on her for as long as we can.
Background: Izzie was hit by a car and left for dead on the highway. Our son JJ took her to the vet & we took her into our home after that. We dont normally rescue dogs & cats but in this case we made an acception.
Comment: Izzie is a miracle- the xrays show at least 3 vertebrate have fused together but this ole girl isnt giving up. She does wobble & stumble but she gets around for her walkabouts.

Bon Bon

Common: white footed ferret
Native to: everywhere
Diet: carnivore
Sex: Female
Age: 4
Died: March 14, 2015
Personality: Bon Bon is a very active- high energy ferret...shes so soft & very loving..She and Doc give each other lots of playful bouts- they are so fun to watch & to play with...
Background: Bon Bon was abandoned in an apartment when her former human caretakers moved out...lucky for her some neighbors looked in the window and saw her locked in carrier- all alone with no one left in the place...how can people do these things? These creatures, due to our own making, depend on us to supply their needs...some people simply have no heart or sense..or maybe both...
Comment: Bon Bon- age is unknown- based her teeth & energy level we are assuming she is fairly young...

Hickory-Dickory-

Common: white footed ferret
Native to: everywhere
Diet: carnivore
Sex: Male
Age: 5
Died: November 9, 2015
Personality: Doc is so playful..he is a lot of fun out running around the hut..be careful though-he will get in between your feet while you are moving around..he loves to chase & play bite at your ankles..he would be considered a true ankle biter...
Background: Doc was purchased at Pet Safari & after a few months his new family could no longer keep him..
Comment: Doc was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer nearly a year ago- with no options but steroids, we were able to extend his life with some quality for longer than we expected but recently his health has declined and the meds werent working anymore so we did the only thing we could to alleviate his suffering... we will miss you sweet boy- what a wonderful ferret friend youve been!!!

Lillie

Common: White footed ferret
Native to: everywhere
Diet: carnivore
Sex: Female
Age: 3
Died: March 15, 2012
Personality: Lillie is a sweet, wonderful ferret-Tripp just loves his new friend- they are so cute to see curled up in the hammock sleeping together. When they are out playing together in the hut it is so fun to watch as they pounce, run & hide together. We hope Lillie will be able to live a long life with Tripp.
Background: Lillie was found by a woman when she was mowing her yard- being albino thankfully made her easy to see, since she is really small (half the size of Tripp). Lillie had no hair whatsoever except on her head. After a vet visit it was determined that Lillie has an adrenal tumor- unfortunately lots of ferrets end up with this from being neutered & spayed too young. Surgery is too high risk to try & remove the tumor- she received her shots & a steroid shot & has since regrown her hair. We will do all that we can to keep her happy & healthy for as long as possible- keep her in your thoughts....
Comment: Lillies age was a guess since she was found in someones yard & we had no details...but the adrenal tumor had taken its toll. Lillie passed away but up until her last day she was still coming out to play (only a little while) & then curling up in her blanket to rest. We sure will miss her but we are glad we got to love her for a little while!

Tripp

Common: White Footed Ferret
Native to: everywhere
Diet: carnivore
Sex: Male
Age: 4
Died: October 13, 2011
Personality: Tripp is playful, loving and fun. Since the passing of Sweet Pea the SC CARES family has missed having a ferret rummaging through EVERYTHING. Tripp will even climb into the frig while youre putting away veggies. He loves to be held and LOVES to play with Garfileld. They both do well with eachother.
Background: Tripp was rescued by a yound woman 2 years ago from a shelter. Her life required her to move and she left Tripp with her brother. He recently was aquiring a new roommate who did not want to live with a ferret. Boy is he missing out!!

Mahala

Common: Red Fox
Native to: North America, Europe, Asia, Australia
Diet: Small mammals
Sex: Male
Age: 11
Died: June 13, 2010
Personality: Mahala is pretty shy- our tours do not always get to see him. He has dug a den where he spends most of the day- sleeping. Around five or six in the evening, he will come out and start looking for us to bring him his dinner
Background: Mahala came to SC CARES from a private zoo outside of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Grandma

Common: Goat
Native to: everywhere
Diet: grains & hay
Sex: Female
Age: 21
Died: March 4, 2019
Personality: Grandma is a beautiful, sweet girl. We can only hope that the remaining time that she has will be happy for her. Goats lifespan is 15-18 years. Grandma came to SC CARES in August of 2009.
Background: Grandma came from a local who had a small herd and wanted to downsize.Grandma is pretty old- her age is a guess. She came to us with open sores on her face- after the vets visit & testing it was discovered she has CL- a contagious viral infection, for which there is no cure. This will not take her life but means she must live separately from all other animals.

Luigi

Common: Newby Mix Pigmy Goat
Native to: Africa
Diet: Vegetation
Sex: Male
Age: 9
Died: June 6, 2016
Personality: Luigi is a very friendly guy and will walk on a leash. We think he will be a great ambassador for the sanctuary.
Background: Luigi came from a loving home. Because he kept escaping from his fenced area to play in the road, the family felt he would be safer at SC-CARES. He is a larger goat and we thought he would be a good companion for Kumar, the llama, who has a less than delightful disposition. We were wrong—Kumar began nipping at Luigi so they are now separated.
Comment: Luigi has been laid to rest as of today- in the past 6 months he continued to loose weight, Dr.Bolten ran tests, even pulled some loose teeth hoping that would help him eat better- he was kept separate and given special treats & food for the past several months but finally he just kept loosing weight and no longer had the energy to get up...we will miss you Luigi but well see you again!!

Tonto

Common: Pigmy Goat
Native to: Africa
Diet: Vegetation
Sex: Male
Age: 3
Died: July 12, 2011
Personality: Tonto is still a little shy when it comes to humans but we are confident that will not last long.
Background: Since the loss of Moracco in November of 2008, Cairo had been terribly depressed. He was showing no interest in the things that used to fill his and Moracco’s days: greeting visitors, eating the landscape, playing on your car if you parked in the wrong place. Normally very active and friendly, he was lying in one spot for most of the day. Only in very rare cases, does SC-CARES solicit animals for the sanctuary but because goats are herd animals and should not be kept as solitary animals, we have been searching for a buddy for Cairo. Thanks to the hard work of dedicated volunteer Alicia Norris, Tonto is now Cairo’s new playmate. Tonto was donated by a local farmer. He is one year old and full-grown; although at half the size of Cairo he looks like a baby. It took no time at all for the two goats to bond. For the first couple of days Cairo was allowed to roam free but Tonto was confined to the goat enclosure. Cairo would not wander far, but if he got out of Tonto’s sight, Tonto would bleat until Cairo came running. They both now wander the grounds during the day, never out of sight of each other.
Comment: We mistakenly gave Tonto wild cherry branches not knowing that its toxic to ruminant animals.

Eddie

Common: Pygmy goat
Native to: Africa
Diet: vegetation & hay
Sex: Male
Age: 0
Died: January 29, 2014
Personality: Baby Eddie does not know that he is a goat, nor that he is crippled..ignorance IS bliss- as he goes about his day-playing, running and acting like a goat-EVERYONE loves Eddie- his sweet personality and general cuteness simply draws you in!
Background: Eddie was born on a local farm as a twin. His brother had the same birth defect- missing the last joint and hoof on both back legs- sadly his sibling had been killed-either by the herd or according to the farmer who raised these goats for meat- by a raptor. Either way Eddie was not safe- a neighbor knew of this situation & contacted us-then made arrangements for us to pick him up. So far he gets around great- but we will see if he is going to need prosthetic legs as he grows. Eddie has moved in with the 4 little pigs & they all seem to be adjusting well...
Comment: What is in a name? This one came to me as I tried to think of someone who faced challenges such as Eddie & overcame them- someone who against all odds & difficulty kept pushing onward...then I remembered a lady from our tours-her son fought in Afghanistan & sustained life threatening injury from an explosive- loosing both of his legs, his arm & all but 2 fingers on the other hand- he is currently undergoing surgeries and being fitted for prosthetic limbs- continues to smile, heal and live! An idol for us all- his name is Eddie!

Comment: Frack developed kidney stones & passed one that caused irreparable damage to his body- after the vet visit & a week of force feeding him meds & herbs- he was not making any improvements and suffering trying to go to the bathroom...the decision was made to take him in to alleviate his suffering...as his life ended-I was kissing him & telling him how loved he was & how sorry we were that we could not do more to help him...

Rome

Background: A lady in Charleston had purchase a female "skinny pig" from a pet store in Fla. soon to discover she was pregnant. When the babies were born this lady had many offers to take them-all were interested in breeding them to sell in the exotic pet industry. Thankfully the lady did not want them to see such a fate and luckily we were able to take them in."Skinny Pigs" are a hybrid mix of guinea pigs breed for testing in a lab in Canada. This breed of hairless guinea pigs has only been in existence for less than 40 years...
Comment: **Rome did not die but did go to live with Dr.Janski- his right front foot is going to need multiple surgeries in order to try to save it especially since his left front foot is deformed. Dr.J offered to take him as her own in order to monitor his situation & do all she can to help him! We are grateful!!**

Coal

Native to: Netherlands
Diet: Hay, Oats
Sex: Male
Age: 27

Personality: Coal is a very handsome boy. He prances with head held high, looking so proud. At first the girls were not sure about sharing their space with this guy but in no time at all they accepted him .
Background: Coal came to us from a very caring woman. After her husband passed away she moved and could no longer keep the ten horses she and her husband cared for. Comment: Obit:Our sweet, old man left us last night to find greener pastures...he looked like he had just laid down and drifted off. Coal was at least 30 yrs old according to our vet & has lived here with us at SC CARES since 2009. He seemed fine leading up to leaving us- Im thankful I stopped what I was doing on Monday & cut up an apple for him-he always loved getting special treats! Coal had lost almost all of his teeth and couldnt have hay so we tried to comfort him with apples! Baby is our oldest horse-vets guess is at least 20 years old...shes a fighter though- through EPM(a parasite that attacks the nervous system), string halt & currently 12/10-shes losing the sole of one foot- this girl is not giving in...since her arrival in 2008, Baby has stolen the hearts of many!!!
Background: Babys story is a sad one- she has been bred all of her life & each one of her colts have been taken from her every time to sell. I do not think this poor horse has ever felt safe & happy. She is approx.16 years old & has been a brood mare for so long that it caused medical problems for which surgery had to be done to hopefully correct.
Comment: **update-12/10- Baby is in the worst physical shape of all of our horses but continues to fight through whatever is ailing her at the moment- she knows that she is loved here & loves being here. Thanks to all who have cared for & about this girl- she making it !!9/30/11-Babys suffering has ended...her body had just gotten to a point of not being able to heal...what a wonderful spirit she shared with us- she will be missed terribly!! Age: 25
Died: June 20, 2018
Personality: Update 12/2014 Charmer is still amazing! Our first horse rescue here @ SC CARES- she will always hold a special place in our hearts!
Background: Charmer came to us December, 14 2007. She has navicular disease. Her surgery went well and she was allowed back in the pasture in March 2008.**Nov-2017** we just received an email with Charmers birth certificate- she was born on 4/19/1993 in South Dakota and her official name is "Dynamic Charmer"...I think we can all agree that she is!!!
Comment: Charmer...SC CARES very first horse resident in 2007 and what a great horse friend she was. At 25 years old we sure loved having her with us for the 10 years she lived here! Charmer will be missed more than words can say...and by SO many people who loved her! I told her today to go the bridge look for Baby(her first friend SC-CARES) and Hank Winter(who came to SCC for Charmer and all the other creatures she would know from SCC and when each of our times come please be there to greet us and love us again! Fortitude

Common: Quarter Horse
Native to: everywhere
Diet: grain/hay
Sex: Male
Age: 25
Died: February 25, 2019
Personality: Fortitude has the sweetest personality and is such a loving, gentle soul. He loves pets and gives hugs! He seems truly grateful to have been rescued and now have food and love. We hope we give him a few more years to enjoy his life!
Background: Fortitude came to SC CARES on June 9, 2018 after receiving pictures and information that he was tied out with no food, clean water or shelter and obviously starving. Animal Control had to be called since we cannot go onto individuals property without the authorities and once the officer arrived he immediately called SC CARES back and said this horse needs help now. Arrangements were made to transport him and the man of the property agreed to relinquish the horse. Fortitude, as hes now called, was SO excited to see us when we arrived I honestly believe he knew we were there to rescue him from what had been a torturous life for the past couple of years. When he arrived and was unloaded from the trailer the other horses at SC CARES called out to him and Forti seemed excited to be here. His head was held high, he walked with as much pep as he could muster considering the shape he was in.
Comment: While not knowing the full story we do know that for over a year Forti had not been fed properly. He had been tied out by a rope with only weeds to graze on and a slimy pond to drink from with no shelter from the freezing temps or the sweltering sun. His back had rain rot(a fungus) and his legs had scratches(a bacterial infection) both of which could have been treated with medication. His mane was so knotted we had to cut it, his coat so matted from not shedding that it took 2 baths and lots of brushing to get his winter coat off in June!Fortis first night here I went out to check on him and I told him he would never be hungry again and that there would be so many people to love him now.As I cried at the shape he was in he actually put his head to my chest as if he was hugging me and saying thank you.Fortitude is 25 years old, making him an elder but with a spark in his eye and under our vets recommendation we increase his food weekly and hope to give this gentle, sweet soul at least a few more years of love and happiness!

Background: Lady came to us through a volunteer who does horse rescue as she can. This horse was kept in a grass field & too much grass can cause what is called "laminitis"- a hoof problem that can be cleared with a diet of only grains & hay. Now that Lady is here her hooves are healed and she is just a beautiful as ever.
Comment: Ladys passing was unexpected- apparently she had fluid around her heart- our biggest but most gentle horse will be missed terribly..

Background: Loki came to us from a local family who are going through serious health issues. They do intend to come visit Loki as much as possible! We hope Loki will be happy here for as long as we have with her!
Comment: Loki at 27 had accumulated too many issues for her body to battle. It was with much consideration and after trying everything we possibly could to help her heal that we were forced to make "the" decision to give her peace. I wish we could have given you a few more years...We only had you for 1 & 1/2 years but in that time grew to love you SO much! We will see you at the bridge sweet girl!

Rocky

Common: Mealy Amazon
Native to: South America
Diet: Fruits,nuts,seeds
Sex: Male
Age: 31
Died: July 13, 2016
Personality: Rocky is wonderful boy- he is generally quite calm. When he does talk- his voice is lots different from the other birds in the hut. He has made many friends-feathered & human. His closest neighbor, Molly, comes to visit at his house everyday. He is really a very shy bird and very easy going.. he is a sweetheart.
Background: Rocky came to us from a wonderful woman in NC who had been keeping the bird for a sick friend- for ten years. She talked with this friend on many occasions but the friend was still unable to take him back. This lady had dogs & Rocky was not fond of them so living together was difficult. The woman felt Rocky would be happier here & we sure enjoy his company. Rocky has currently taken to two of our volunteers- he will call to them when they come to visit & fairly quick to climb on their arm for some one on one attention. What a neat guy!
Comment: 7/13/16 I thought I had the day thought out...however things quickly changed..Pat came to get me around 8:15 & said that Rocky was laying in bottom of his cage- I scooped him up and could tell he wasnt long for this world. His breathing was labored and it appeared to me that he maybe had a heart issue of some sort. By 9:11am he had passed. Im grateful I could be with him, holding him & telling him I loved him and for him to go be free- to let his soul fly high, like he shouldve been able to do in this life if it werent for breeders-churning them out only to live in captivity. People PLEASE stop breeding these animals!! Rocky was fine just the night before when I put him to bed. He was 31 years old(as best as we were told) BUT his lifespan couldve been 60-80 yrs....I dont know what happened, not knowing exactly what life he mightve had with 2 previous humans, or if genetically something wasnt right?? I know were a sanctuary and people may think were just here to take care of them, which we do the very best possible for them, but they are truly our friends and now my heart is breaking for his absence....

Lucky

Common: African Grey
Native to: Africa
Diet: nuggets,seeds,fruits/veggies
Sex: Female
Age: 6
Died: January 24, 2012
Personality: Lucky so far is not fond of too many people..younger people seem to do better with her- probably based on the teenager that rescued & cared for her...we hope as time goes by she will warm up to others- if not that will be fine too..she and a few of the other parrots seem to get along great & hang out in the day together...
Background: Luckys is a bizarre story- found in a backyard of a local family in Georgetown- the dog was barking crazily and the teenage daughter of the family wrapped her in a towel & cared for her for 3 mos. They searched for neighbors or anyone who may have had this bird- but with no success they called us to take her in...what was really strange is that as you might know- we lost our Kinshasa - African grey almost two years ago when she got spooked and flew away...we thought this might be her...could it be possible?? Skip had bonded so closely with Kinshasa & does not think that it is her- but time & personalities can change...I do not know if we will ever really know....

She knows only one bite mode and that is full strength. Most volunteers are intimidated by her and rightly so.
Background: Alex came to us through a veterinarian that had her (she has been DNA tested) in his office for years. A young college grad tried to keep her but he was intimidated and soon called us.
Comment: We lost Alex to some type of infection...Im so sorry I didnt get her to the vet sooner---I must remember these birds hide illness-so when I notice somethings not right- I must act immediately...no matter how insignificant the issue may seem...I love you Alex & I am sorry I couldnt do more....

Sex: Male
Age: 16
Died: March 15, 2014

Background: Arnold lived on a farm with donkeys and emus who were not very crazy about him. They would bite him and chase him around. The owner of the farm moved to a retirement home and his son asked us to take Arnold. He came to SC CARES in Nov 2008 and is about 50 lbs underweight. We are feeding him and already seeing improvement in those wrinkles.

Jimmy (aka-JD)

Common: Pot-bellied pig
Native to: Vietnam
Diet: grains/veggies
Sex: Male
Age: 14
Died: January 30, 2019
Personality: Jimmy is a sweet, lovely pig. He loves to sleep and eat. He does get a bit fussy when you try to get him up to exercise. He grunts and snorts like a fussy ole man. Hes getting along better but in the next few years we are really looking to see improvement.
Background: Jimmys past 4 years were not the best. I believe the first 2 years were not too bad but the last 2 years he spent all of his time in a small laundry room, unable to get outside to exercise. His diet consisted of dog food, dumdum suckers and gum. This lifestyle led him to obesity and hoof problems. When Jimmy arrived at SC CARES he was pretty much cripple. It took twice with the farrier to get his hooves into shape and he is double the weight he should be. Weighing in at 300+lbs we are working on his diet to get him down to 150 lbs. This process will safely take several years.
Comment: We are optimistic about his weight although being so fat that he was unable to open his eyes for so long he is now permantely blind. At 4 years old with a lifespan of 15-20 years we are hopeful he will have a remaining wonderful life here. Update 12/2014- Jimmy did loose 82 lbs but sadly has put a little of it back on...were trying to keep him on his diet but he refuses to exercise-except when he hears us feeding the others- then he will get up & start sniffing out his bowl !!

Personality: Malala is still adjusting to us as of 5/23/16- hopefully shell be happy and eventually allow us to love on her!
Background: Ive seen the results of all sorts of abuse but this one is right at the top...the poor girl was tied to ?? as bait to catch?? with some type of fishing line or wire. What a fighter- she gnawed as best she could to get away but not before injury had occurred- the line cut through her skin and ended up wrapped around her neck, front right leg and through her mouth...she must have been like this for quite a while because the lacerations had already begun to heal- who knows how long she stayed tied and struggled to get free. i realize that rats are prey animals but no creature deserves to be tortured. Weve decided to name her Malala since like her namesake shes a fighter and didnt give up! Hopefully whatever time she has left will be happy here at SC CARES.
Comment: We lost Malala last night-10/13/17 -shed been with us for almost 1 & 1/2 years- after such an awful beginning to her life we can only hope that she felt loved & cared for & realized that not ALL humans are bad...we will see you at the bridge Malala!!

Personality: Freckles is one the sweetest roosters you could ever meet. Hes never once tried to hurt us & boy he sure could with the spurs that he has. We try to keep them trimmed but wow they are massive! Freckles lives in the deer compound with a few hens and is very sweet to them as well. What a gorgeous boy he is!
Comment: Freckles was slowing way down months ago- I noticed a couple of weeks ago he was not feeling himself. Freckles was alive on Sunday morning but by afternoon he had passed. To my knowledge 10 years is pretty old for roosters. I hope the time he lived here he was happy...

Jesse

Common: Chinchilla
Native to: South America
Diet: Plants, fruits, seeds
Sex: Male
Age: 17
Died: June 6, 2016
Personality: Jesse is a bit shy when it comes to pettings. He likes to come out & run around the nocturnal room. When we have the opportunity, we give him a rub behind his ears- he is unbelievably soft.
Background: Jesse was rescued by a group in North Carolina then adopted out to family for several years. The daughter, who was his main caretaker, left for college & could not take him. The remaining family wanted to find another home for him so we took him permanently in July 2007.One of the BIGGEST errors we as humans make is not preparing for caring for these animals. Animals do not like being shifted to new homes, they get used to their surroundings & the humans they connect with. It is tough for them to adjust to so many new places. Jesse is here at SC CARES for the duration of his life & we hope to make it a happy one. Sorry to be preachy.
Comment: Jesses health had been declining for over a year now so we started giving him critical care oxbow-which he LOVED! As of the past few days Jesse could hardly move around, Dr.J checked him last Friday and with his age there was really not much more we could do for him-with a life span of 15-20 years were grateful we had the time we got with him....Jesse has been laid to rest- run free little buddy-well see you again!

Background: Russell came to us in May 2008 from a fellow rehabilitator who took him to educational programs. He was very friendly for the first year but then turned mean. She then decided to send Russell to us. Her facility had no on-site visitors and because we do, he would get attention from us as well as our visitors. Russell them became sweet as pie. Rather than start taking him to programs again, she stuck with her plan and sent him to SC CARES.

Never cleaning his cage, it was rusted out on the bottom from urine. He came to SC CARES with sparse hair, looking like a naked mole rat. We got him to the vet, she did all she could for him. His hair has come back beautifully but he lives with an inoperable adrenal tumor. We hope he will continue to live happily and feel good for as long as possible.

Background: Remy was hand raised after being found orphaned...the loving family that took care of him knew that he should not be a pet...being born so late in the year he was not ready for release in time...we have contacted our previous wildlife educators to find out how best to handle this...it is always our goal to release wild animals to the wild...not as easy as it sounds.. he is so imprinted(likes human contact) & wintering him over is not going to help this situation...we know he would be safe if released her at SC CARES but whose to say he would stay here...we will have to wait this out & see what happens...
Comment: ** As of June- 2011 Remy is a free spirit...after consultation with a flying squirrel rehabber- we decided Remy was a candidate for release...so after an adjustment period outside & feeding acorns & berries that hell find on his own..we opened the door for him to make his life in the wild...although it took him 3 days to venture outside- he finally made his leap into the big world.. its always a worry- we hope hes doing well but if I were him- Id rather have my freedom than be in captivity!!!

Sopie will live out her days helping us educate the public on how important these creatures are to our environment!!
Comment: Sophie passed away in her sleep on the night of 11/12/13- Ruth had prepared a delicious meal for her, which she ate part of before she died. She was curled up in her blanket as though she was asleep...Sophie will be missed- we love the time you gave us!! 2 yrs.9 mos.

She and Ringo used to be roommates until a couple of months ago-she attacked Ringo and punctured his chest- after a visit to the vet it was decided they needed to be housed separately- within a week or so we discovered an egg in Charlottes house- she laid it and left it but this was probably the reason for her agressive behavior.
Background: Charlotte was brought to SC CARES as an LBB (little brown bird). Hand raised and alone she could not be released. Quail work in families/communities to find food & housing. From our research the coveys in this area are hunted- so Charlotte lives with us.

The dove and cats did pretty good for several years but the cats curiosity in wanting to play with Ringo was beginning to be a concern. This family contacted us about taking Ringo so that he wouldnt be stressed by the cats.

The two ended up with a litter of pups- this lady was able to adopt all but two of them out- which left her with four & a neighbor who insisted on causing problems about the animals. After every attempt possible to contain & quiet the animals this neighbor was relentless- causing the lady to have to appear in court. After all of the hooplay- she contacted us & we agreed to take them in. We call them the "Valpack"
Comment: Deja died during the night and we will bury the body, later today, that housed one of the SWEETEST spirits you could ever know. If you came to our events you probably met Deja, if you volunteered here, you met Deja. Her heart was enlarged, which speaks true to her character, but at 10 years old, she could not over come it. Deja has lived here at SC CARES since 2009 and never met a stranger. What a wonderful friend and ambassador she was.I am grateful I got to share her life, although another piece of my heart is now gone.I am grateful she seemed fine until the day of her passing.I am grateful that so many of you cared about her, prayed for her and loved her.Another wonderful spirit will be waiting at the bridge to meet us...

Background: Fuzzy came to us from a lady in Columbia- she had taken in Shiloh & Deja from some person who thought they would be fine on their own. The two ended up with a litter of pups-(Fuzzy is one of their offspring) this lady was able to adopt all but two of them out- which left her with four & a neighbor who insisted on causing problems about the animals. After every attempt possible to contain & quiet the animals this neighbor was relentless- causing the lady to have to appear in court. After all of the hooplay- she contacted us & we agreed to take them in. We call them the "Valpack"

Lobo

Common: wolf-dog hybrid
Native to: not found in the wild
Diet: dog food
Sex: Female
Age: 13
Died: March 30, 2019
Personality: Lobo is the problem child of the pack. She is not really a problem but is just so very shy. The Valpack has been here for 3 months now & Lobo will just come to sniff your hand- still will not let us pet her- so she is the only one we have not been able to walk on a leash. We will not give up- maybe one day- when she is comfortable- she will warm up to us.

SC CARES is PERMANENTLY CLOSED
Tuesday, December 31, 2019 • Time:
SC-CARES has been helping animals for over 13 years here in SC and for many years before moving to SC. It was an accumulation of circumstances, a perfect storm, that is forcing us to close. Considering Skips serious health issues (multiple myeloma cancer), our physical and emotional stress, fluctuating financial and vet support, we couldnt see a light at the end of this tunnel. We did not see a way for the sanctuary to continue in the event one or both of us encountered a crisis. We decide for the animals sake we needed to get ahead of things, before their lives are impacted from any sort of crisis situation.
