Gone But Not Forgotten
One of the hardest parts of caring for so many animals is dealing with loss. It never gets any easier to say goodbye. But thanks to the many generous people that help support this sanctuary, we always know that we have provided the best life possible for each animal, whether for many years or just a short period of time. Still, we miss our friends when they are gone. These are the special animals that we remember every day. They have enriched our lives in a meaningful and everlasting way.

Background: Russell came to us in May 2008 from a fellow rehabilitator who took him to educational programs. He was very friendly for the first year but then turned mean. She then decided to send Russell to us. Her facility had no on-site visitors and because we do, he would get attention from us as well as our visitors. Russell them became sweet as pie. Rather than start taking him to programs again, she stuck with her plan and sent him to SC CARES.

Personality: Sweet pea is one of the calmest, sweetest ferrets ever. He is so much fun to watch when he runs around the hut trying to find something to misplace or something to get into.
Background: Sweet Pea came from a horrible home. These people did not care about him or love him. They stuck his cage in the basement near a drafty broken door. Never cleaning his cage, it was rusted out on the bottom from urine. He came to SC CARES with sparse hair, looking like a naked mole rat. We got him to the vet, she did all she could for him. His hair has come back beautifully but he lives with an inoperable adrenal tumor. We hope he will continue to live happily and feel good for as long as possible.
Comment: After a year and a half, living with a tumor, Sweet Pea lost his battle with it. He was out playing the day before & did not suffer long. Since Nov.15,2008 we have missed soo much

When she is not out running around, she still runs in her exercise wheel. Bambi has quickly become of the favorites of several volunteers & why not- she does enjoy being held & loved on.
Background: Bambi came to us via a pet store in NC. When federal laws prohibited sale of prairie dogs as pets, she & her roommate, Thumper, were no longer needed by the breeder that had them. We were fortunate to have Thumper for several years before cancer took his life. Bambi misses him but loves the extra attention she gets now that she is friendly.
Comment: With MUCH sadness Bambi was put to rest- the humans that remain are still suffering from this loss. Bambi is not suffering any longer though. At. 8 years old (lifespan 5-10 yrs) she brought ALOT of joy to those that knew her for many years... we hope to hear that "yahoo" & "yipee" again from her some day.

Comment: Zelda is now at rest- after her battle with cancerous tumors. What a WONDERFUL creature Zelda was- hearts are broken at the loss. One would think it would be more acceptable when these creatures have outlived their lifespan but honestly the loss is no less. Zelda was over 3yrs.old and a rats lifespan is only 2-3 yrs. Zelda was a very SPECIAL girl who many of us will remember forever.
Common: Brown Quail
Native to: most anywhere
Diet: omnivore- seeds & worms
Sex: Female
Age: 1
Died: August 8, 2009
Personality: Charlotte is a cutie. Her short, squatty body is just as cute as it can be. She enjoys being held and loved on. She and Ringo used to be roommates until a couple of months ago-she attacked Ringo and punctured his chest- after a visit to the vet it was decided they needed to be housed separately- within a week or so we discovered an egg in Charlottes house- she laid it and left it but this was probably the reason for her agressive behavior.
Background: Charlotte was brought to SC CARES as an LBB (little brown bird). Hand raised and alone she could not be released. Quail work in families/communities to find food & housing. From our research the coveys in this area are hunted- so Charlotte lives with us.
Comment: Charlottes passing is puzzling..nothing appeared to be wrong with her until that morning...Dr.Janski is performing a necropsy on her body to help us understand what happend.
